Full job description

Overview

We are seeking a compassionate and reliable Night Care Assistant to join our dedicated night team within a 41-bed residential care home. The successful candidate will provide high-quality care and support throughout the night, ensuring residents remain safe, comfortable, and well cared for whilst promoting dignity, independence, and wellbeing.

The Night Care Assistant plays a vital role in supporting residents during night-time hours, responding to individual needs, conducting regular welfare checks, and ensuring a calm and secure environment is maintained.

Key Responsibilities

Personal Care and Support

Assist residents with personal care, continence care, dressing, and bedtime or morning routines.
Support residents with mobility and repositioning throughout the night.
Respond promptly to call bells and requests for assistance.
Ensure residents remain comfortable and safe during the night.

Resident Monitoring and Wellbeing

Undertake regular welfare checks in accordance with care plans.
Monitor residents for changes in condition, distress, pain, confusion, or discomfort.
Provide reassurance and emotional support to residents who may be anxious or unsettled during the night.
Report any concerns to the senior member of staff.

Nutrition and Hydration

Offer drinks, snacks, and hydration support where required.
Monitor food and fluid intake for residents identified as at risk.
Record intake accurately where required.

Documentation and Record Keeping

Complete daily care records and night reports accurately.
Record personal care provided and any observations made during the shift.
Complete repositioning charts, fluid monitoring charts, bowel charts, and other required documentation.
Ensure all records are completed contemporaneously and accurately.

Health, Safety and Security

Conduct regular walkarounds of the home to ensure resident safety and environmental standards are maintained.
Report hazards, maintenance issues, accidents, and incidents.
Ensure security checks are completed including doors, windows, alarms, and access points.
Follow infection prevention and control procedures at all times.
Support emergency procedures and fire safety arrangements when required.

Team Working

Work collaboratively with colleagues to provide safe and effective care.
Participate in handovers and communicate relevant information effectively.
Attend training and team meetings as required.
Support colleagues to maintain high standards of care.

Resident Experience

Promote a calm, peaceful, and homely atmosphere throughout the night.
Respect residents' privacy, dignity, and personal choices.
Encourage independence wherever possible.
Ensure residents feel safe, valued, and supported.

Essential Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

Previous care experience desirable but not essential.
Willingness to undertake training and development.
Good standard of literacy and numeracy.

Knowledge and Skills

Understanding of person-centred care.
Good communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to maintain accurate records.

Personal Attributes

Caring, compassionate, and patient.
Reliable and trustworthy.
Calm under pressure.
Flexible and adaptable.

Desirable

NVQ Level 2 Health and Social Care.
Experience supporting older adults and individuals living with dementia.
Moving and Handling training.
Knowledge of safeguarding and infection control procedures.

Working Hours

Night shifts on a rota basis including weekends and bank holidays as required.
