Full job description

Yard Operative

Location: Crokers Park, Edgelands Cross, Totnes Road, Ipplepen, Newton Abbot, Devon, TQ12 5UG

Salary: Competitive depending on experience

Hours: Monday–Friday, 7.30am–5pm, plus Saturdays 8am–12.30pm approximately once a month (rota basis)

Southern Timber Co Ltd is a trusted supplier of quality timber, landscaping and building products, serving trade and retail customers across the region. We're looking for a reliable and hardworking Yard Operative to join our growing team.

The Role

As a Yard Operative, you'll play a key part in keeping our yard running smoothly — loading and unloading deliveries, moving stock, and helping customers get what they need, safely and efficiently.

Key responsibilities:

Operating a forklift to load, unload, and move timber and building materials
Loading our own delivery lorries ready for despatch
Picking and preparing orders for collection or delivery
Keeping the yard organised, tidy, and safe
Assisting customers and trade drivers with loading
Carrying out routine checks on forklift equipment
Supporting general yard duties as required

What We're Looking For

Previous yard or warehouse experience preferred
Good physical fitness — the role involves manual handling
A strong focus on health and safety
Reliable, punctual, and a good team player
Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
Valid, in-date forklift licence preferred — full training provided for the right candidate
