Full job description

Purpose of Position

To prepare and cook the menu meals to the required standard.

To assist in the economic use of ingredients.

To support the cook in the effective operation of the kitchen.

To be aware of and follow all the service‘s safeguarding and health and safety policies and procedures.

To prepare ingredients for cooking in line with the Hospital Menu requirements.

To stand in for the cook and prepare meals when the cook is unavailable.

To ensure that all wards in the hospital have adequate stocks of dry and other foodstuffs as required.

To assist the cook in devising menus

To ensure that all stock on delivery is recorded and documented and stored appropriately

Principal Responsibilities

· To prepare food and cook in a safe and hygienic manner.

· To be aware of the patients dietary needs and respond to their comments and requests in respect of the menu.

· To be involved with the preparation cooking and serving of breakfast.

· To have a suitable food and hygiene certificate.

· To dispose of waste correctly in line with recent regulations.

· To ensure that all food is labelled and is used within the prescribed period, with particular attention paid to perishable goods.

· To ensure that all food is stored correctly in line with legislative requirements.

· To assist in the serving of food.

· To be responsible for all staff meals being charged at the appropriate rate.

· To perform other such reasonable duties as may be required.

· To be fully aware and comply with infection control policies and procedures and appropriate hand hygiene technique.

· To ensure that all kitchen areas are maintained in line with Hygiene and Health and Safety requirements.

· To ensure that all standards of cleanliness are adhered to and that all kitchen equipment is thoroughly cleaned and available for further usage.

· To ensure that all cleaning substances are in line with requirements for food preparation areas.

· To carry out audits of all areas to ensure that they are free of pests or other possible contaminants.

· To accept all orders of food and ensure that this is checked and stored correctly.

· To check all order documentation/receipts against requisitions

· To assist the cook and ensure that regular stock checks and audits are performed in relation to stock

· To minimise wastage at all times.

· To report any defects or breakages and record and document these.

· To assist in auditing of kitchen equipment ensuring that repairs and servicing is requested where necessary.

General Responsibilities

Attend training, supervision and development opportunities as directed by the Line Manager
Attend meetings and produce verbal and written reports as requested by the Line Manager.
Adhere to all hospital policies and procedures, in particular; all duties must be carried out to comply with:

Notification of accidents/incidents and other health and safety requirements

Statutory legislation, in particular, the Health and Hygiene regulations

Nationally and locally agreed codes of practice

Fire precautions.

Security requirements.

When you start work as a kitchen assistant, you will be given the training you need. This, amongst other courses, includes health and safety and manual handling as well as an introduction to the Hospital.

PERSON SPECIFICATION FOR KITCHEN ASSISTANT

Essential:

· Previous experience working in care or restaurant kitchen settings.

· Knowledge of health and safety regulations.

· Be physically fit to undertake the role

· Show empathy, care and compassion.

· Ability to communicate effectively with patients, visitors and colleagues.

· Ability to work independently, flexibly and professionally.

· Ability to adhere to instructions, standards and procedures.

· Ability to build relationships and show respect for other people.

· Positive attitude and enthusiasm.

· Ability to work as part of a team.

Desirable

· Previous experience working in a healthcare/care home environment

· Level 2 Award in Food hygiene or equivalent

· Knowledge of different diets and allergies
