Job Purpose

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Accountant to support the day-to-day finance operations of the business. The successful candidate will have 1–2 years of accounting or finance experience, with strong knowledge of purchase ledger and bank reconciliations, and a desire to develop their career in accounting. This role is ideal for someone looking to begin their Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification whilst gaining practical experience at work with a view to career progression with the company.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain and process the purchase ledger, ensuring invoices are accurately recorded and authorised
Match purchase invoices to purchase orders and delivery notes where applicable
Prepare supplier payment runs and manage supplier queries
Reconcile supplier statements and resolve discrepancies promptly
Perform daily, weekly, and monthly bank reconciliations
Post bank transactions and investigate unmatched items
Assist with sales ledger tasks including customer receipts and account reconciliations
Support month-end processes
Maintain accurate financial records and filing systems
Assist with general finance administration and ad hoc reporting
Support the wider finance team with audits and year-end preparation

Skills & Experience

Essential

1–2 years’ experience in an accounts, finance, or bookkeeping role
Experience with purchase ledger / accounts payable
Experience carrying out bank reconciliations
Good understanding of accounting principles and double-entry bookkeeping
Strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy
Good Excel skills and confidence using accounting software
Strong organisational and time management skills
Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team

Desirable

Experience using accounting systems such as Sage 50 Accounts
Exposure to month-end processes
Studying or ready to start Association of Accounting Technicians qualification
