Full job description

The Dun Cow is a historic village pub in Hornton, near Banbury, with a traditional bar, garden, games room, regular events, and a small but friendly team. We are looking for a capable, calm and reliable Bar Manager / Duty Manager to help run the pub day-to-day.

This role would suit someone who enjoys taking ownership of a shift, looking after regulars, keeping standards high, and being trusted to open, close and manage the bar without needing constant supervision.

The position is offered initially as a fixed-term role, with the possibility of extension depending on business needs. Start date can be flexible, ideally July or August.

The role

You will be responsible for running bar shifts confidently and professionally. This will include:

Opening and closing the pub
Serving customers and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere
Managing the bar during quieter shifts independently
Supervising junior staff during busier shifts
Cashing up and following end-of-day procedures
Keeping the bar clean, stocked and well presented
Helping manage stock, deliveries and basic cellar tasks
Supporting events, quiz nights, games nights and private hire bookings
Maintaining good standards of customer service, hygiene and licensing compliance
Communicating clearly with the owner about issues, stock needs, staffing and customer feedback

This is not a corporate chain role. It is a hands-on village pub role where reliability, common sense and personality matter.

About you

We are looking for someone who is:

Experienced behind a bar, ideally with supervisor or duty manager experience
Confident opening and closing a licensed premises
Comfortable working alone during quieter periods
Good with regulars, visitors and village customers
Calm under pressure and able to keep standards high
Honest, punctual and dependable
Happy to work evenings and weekends
Able to use basic till/EPOS systems
Comfortable with cleaning, stocking, glassware and cellar basics
Able to get to Hornton reliably, as public transport is limited

A Personal Licence would be a bonus, but it is not essential for the right person. Previous pub, restaurant, hotel, bar, taproom or hospitality supervisor experience would all be relevant.

Hours

Hours can be discussed, but the role is likely to include a mix of weekday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays.

Typical hours may be around 25–35 hours per week, depending on the candidate and the needs of the business. We are open to discussing either part-time or near full-time arrangements.

Pay

£14.50–£15.50 per hour depending on experience, plus tips where applicable.
