Full job description

Are you an experienced and motivated Dental Nurse with a passion for providing high-quality care to patients with complex needs? We are seeking a dedicated Sedation Dental Nurse to join our Dental Salaried Service and play a key role in delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred care.

The successful candidate will provide specialist support for patients receiving both inhalation sedation (IS) and intravenous (IV) sedation, ensuring the highest standards of care are maintained in a variety of clinical settings. Working closely with the wider dental team, you will help create a positive patient experience and support the delivery of treatment in challenging environments.

You will be responsible for coordinating, planning, and managing the sedation service, including the administration of sedation referrals, waiting lists, and the effective utilisation of clinical sedation sessions. The role also includes collecting and reporting service activity data, supporting service development, and working closely with the management team to ensure efficient delivery of care.

This is an excellent opportunity for a proactive individual with strong organisational and communication skills to contribute to a specialist service that makes a real difference to patients' oral health and wellbeing.

Liaise with Management to ensure all operational information such as staffing information is available to carry out planned sedation clinical sessions. Manage sedation referrals, waiting lists and preparation of booking patient appointments to ensure the maximum utilisation of clinics.

Record and process data for the sedation service, compiling accurate reports and reporting the information in meetings to Management. Operate as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support patients through clinical pathways.

Manage own workload and any clinic changes in conjunction with clinical staff.

Prepare and equip the clinical environment to ensure clinical standards and service requirements are met.

Identify the patient’s dental nursing requirements during treatment and provide high quality care to meet the required need, ensuring the safe and precise delivery of care at all times.

Provide appropriate pre and postoperative information to patients, ensuring that patients understand and comply with the information.

This includes information for patients undertaking Conscious Sedation procedures. Liaise with Clinicians and Pharmacy for ordering the controlled drug Midazolam for use in IV sedation for patient treatment. Monitor, evaluate and report on the clinical condition of the conscious sedation patient before, during and following the procedure.

Annex 21

During this training period, salary will be paid in accordance with Annex 21 of the Terms and Conditions as follows :

Months 1 - 12 of the training period will be paid at 65% of the top of Band 5 pay scale,
Months 13 - 18 of the training period will be paid at 70% of the top of Band 5 pay scale

Upon successful attainment of the qualification, even if sooner than the 18 months allocated timeframe, the post holder will automatically move to the bottom of the Band 5 pay scale (without financial detriment), as they will then meet the full KSF outline of this role and be expected to undertake all duties within this Job Description as indicated.

NOTE : There will be some circumstances where current staff apply for these posts, and their new trainee salary will be below that of their current salary. To aid both the recruitment and development of staff it is recommended that staff across NHS Wales should have continuity of pay for the duration of the training to avoid financial detriment. This should apply when staff take up training posts both within and across NHS Wales organisations. Following this training, the remuneration will be the bottom of Band 5, again without financial detriment.

This post is advertised as Welsh Desirable. Whilst the candidate doesn't need to have skills in Welsh, we'll consider it an advantage when short-listing and selecting candidates. This isn’t ‘fluency’, just Speaking & Listening skills at Level 3 (equivalent to CEFR B2) or above. Level 3 means being able to communicate in Welsh during routine clinical situations, such as welcoming patients, discussing straightforward aspects of their care and answering routine questions. If you’re comfortable holding everyday conversations in Welsh, we encourage you to apply. Your Welsh language skills will help us provide person-centred care and enable patients to receive services in their language of choice.
