Full job description

Part-Time Housing Officer

Location: [Birmingham, Selly Oak]
Hours: Part-Time (15 hours per week)
Salary: [£25,350 annual pro rated to 15 hours pw]
Potential for increased hours (30–37.5 per week) from August–September

We are looking for a proactive and organised Housing Officer to join our friendly team supporting residents within our accommodation services.

This role is ideal for someone with experience in housing, supported accommodation, benefits administration, or tenancy management who enjoys solving problems, building positive relationships, and ensuring that accommodation services run smoothly.

About the Role

A key focus of this position is managing housing benefit and Universal Credit-related matters. You will be responsible for liaising with local authorities, supporting residents with benefit claims, resolving payment issues, and ensuring rental income is maximised through effective case management.

You will also help maintain high accommodation standards, support residents to sustain their tenancies, and ensure accurate records are maintained across our housing management systems.

Our residents are generally low support needs, meaning this role is less focused on intensive support work and more focused on housing management, benefits administration, and ensuring services operate efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

Manage housing benefit and Universal Credit cases from application through to payment.
Liaise confidently with Birmingham City Council and other relevant agencies to resolve benefit issues, payment delays, suspensions, and refusals.
Investigate and challenge benefit decisions where evidence demonstrates eligibility.
Monitor rent accounts and follow up outstanding payments.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, case notes, and tenancy documentation.
Conduct regular property visits and accommodation inspections to ensure standards are maintained.
Support residents with housing-related matters and tenancy sustainment.
Build positive relationships with residents, local authority officers, and partner agencies.
Ensure compliance with housing standards, health and safety requirements, and organisational procedures.
Assist with occupancy management, move-ins, move-outs, and property administration.

About You

We are particularly interested in candidates who have strong experience and knowledge of:

Universal Credit and Housing Benefit administration.
Working with local authority benefits teams and resolving complex payment issues.
Tenancy management, housing administration, or supported accommodation services.
Rent collection and income management.
Record keeping and maintaining accurate housing documentation.

You will also:

Be highly organised and persistent when resolving issues.
Have excellent communication and negotiation skills.
Be confident challenging decisions professionally and advocating on behalf of residents.
Be comfortable using housing management systems and Microsoft Office applications.
Have strong attention to detail and a diligent approach to paperwork.
Be professional, approachable, and able to build positive relationships with residents and stakeholders.
Have a good understanding of accommodation standards and housing compliance requirements.
