Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Support Worker to join our team within a care home supporting adults with learning disabilities. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership qualities, excellent communication skills, and a compassionate, person-centred approach to supporting individuals to live safely, confidently, and as independently as possible. This role involves supervising support staff, implementing and reviewing care and support plans, promoting choice and dignity, and ensuring the highest standards of care are maintained. The Senior Support Worker will play a vital role in creating a safe, respectful, inclusive, and nurturing environment where each resident is supported to achieve their personal goals and enjoy a good quality of life.

Duties

Lead and supervise support staff to deliver personalised, person-centred care and support in line with individual care plans, risk assessments, and agreed outcomes
Support residents with daily living tasks such as personal care, meal preparation, medication management, mobility, household routines, and maintaining a clean and safe living environment
Promote independence, choice, dignity, privacy, and inclusion, encouraging residents to develop daily living skills and participate in decisions about their care
Develop, review, and update individualised care and support plans in collaboration with residents, families, advocates, healthcare professionals, and external agencies
Support residents with learning disabilities, autism, communication needs, physical disabilities, mental health needs, or behaviours that may challenge, using calm, respectful, and consistent approaches
Implement Positive Behaviour Support strategies, de-escalation techniques, and proactive support plans to reduce distress and promote wellbeing
Use appropriate communication methods, including clear verbal communication, visual aids, communication passports, easy-read information, and other individual communication tools where required
Ensure safeguarding, health and safety, infection prevention, medication, moving and handling, and confidentiality procedures are followed at all times
Provide guidance, supervision, mentoring, and day-to-day support to junior team members, promoting professional development, good practice, and team cohesion
Maintain accurate and timely records of care, support, incidents, appointments, medication, daily notes, and resident progress using IT systems
Organise and support meaningful activities, hobbies, appointments, social opportunities, and community access to promote wellbeing and inclusion
Communicate effectively with residents, families, advocates, professionals, and team members to ensure joined-up, consistent, and high-quality support

Qualifications

Proven experience in a senior, lead, or supervisory role within a learning disability, residential care, supported living, or similar adult social care setting
Experience supporting adults with learning disabilities, autism, complex needs, communication needs, or behaviours that may challenge
Ability to lead, motivate, supervise, and support a team effectively while maintaining high standards of care and professionalism
Good understanding of person-centred care, safeguarding adults, dignity, equality, choice, independence, risk management, and positive behaviour support
Knowledge of care planning, health and safety procedures, medication procedures, confidentiality, and relevant adult social care legislation and regulatory standards
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to liaise confidently and respectfully with residents, families, advocates, professionals, and colleagues
IT literacy skills for maintaining accurate records, completing reports, and using electronic care planning or rota systems
NVQ/QCF Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent is desirable, or willingness to work towards it
Driving licence is desirable for supporting residents with appointments, outings, and community activities
Compassionate, patient, reliable, and organised, with a positive attitude and a genuine commitment to improving the lives of people with learning disabilities
