Full job description

We are looking for a Plant Nursery Assistant to join our growing nursery team on a zero-hours seasonal contract.

This role is ideal for someone looking for flexible work within a plant nursery environment. As the business is seasonal, the number of hours available will vary throughout the year, with increased opportunities during our busier periods.

Initially, the main focus of the role will be picking, preparing and packing plants for customer orders, ensuring that plants are handled carefully and arrive with customers in excellent condition.

As the nursery grows, we would like the role to develop into a wider horticultural and customer-facing position, including helping customers with plant questions and supporting the wider day-to-day running of the nursery.

Key Responsibilities

Initially, you will mainly be responsible for:

Picking plants accurately from nursery stock for customer orders.
Preparing and packing plants securely for delivery.
Checking plants for quality, health and presentation before dispatch.
Ensuring the correct plants and quantities are packed against customer orders.
Handling plants carefully to prevent damage during picking and packing.
Loading and unloading deliveries where required.
Keeping packing areas clean, organised and safe.
Moving plants, compost, pots and other nursery supplies around the site.
Helping with general nursery duties as required.

As the role develops, responsibilities may include:

Assisting with planting, watering, fertilising, pruning and transplanting a wide variety of plants.
Operating irrigation systems efficiently to maintain appropriate moisture levels across different areas of the nursery.
Using hand tools and power tools safely for planting, pruning and general nursery maintenance.
Carrying out routine cleaning and basic maintenance of nursery equipment and machinery.
Assisting with troubleshooting and minor repairs where appropriate.
Safely handling heavier plants, soil, compost, fertiliser and other nursery supplies.
Maintaining clean, tidy and well-organised working areas, plant displays and tool storage.
Helping to maintain the overall appearance and presentation of the nursery.
Providing basic assistance to customers and answering questions about plants as your knowledge develops.
Supporting other members of the nursery team with general horticultural tasks.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who is reliable, practical and keen to learn.

Previous nursery or horticultural experience would be an advantage, but it is not essential, as training can be provided for the right person.

You should:

Have a genuine interest in plants and horticulture.
Be comfortable working outdoors in different weather conditions.
Be physically fit and comfortable with regular lifting and moving of plants.
Have good attention to detail when picking and packing customer orders.
Be reliable, punctual and able to work as part of a small team.
Be willing to learn about a wide range of plants and their care.
Have a positive attitude and be willing to get involved with different areas of the business.
Be comfortable eventually speaking with customers and providing basic plant advice.

About the Contract

This is a zero-hours seasonal position, meaning there are no guaranteed minimum hours and the amount of work available will vary according to the needs of the nursery and seasonal demand.

There will generally be more work available during our peak periods, particularly when customer orders and nursery activity increase.

The flexible nature of the contract may suit someone looking for seasonal work, additional hours or the opportunity to gain experience within the horticultural industry.
