About the Role
Due to continued growth and an increasing workload, AC&MS Ltd is looking to recruit a Trainee Asbestos Surveyor / NNLW Asbestos Removal Operative.
This is an excellent opportunity for the right person to join an established and growing asbestos consultancy and develop a long-term career within the asbestos industry.
The position combines two areas of our asbestos services: asbestos surveying and Notifiable Non-Licensed Work (NNLW) involving asbestos-containing materials.
Previous asbestos experience is not essential.
We are looking for someone reliable, practical, professional and willing to learn. AC&MS Ltd will provide the successful candidate with the necessary in-house and external training to develop into a qualified asbestos surveyor and competent NNLW asbestos removal operative.
About AC&MS Ltd
AC&MS Ltd is an established asbestos consultancy based in Canvey Island, Essex.
We provide asbestos surveying, bulk sample identification, air monitoring and analytical services, together with asbestos removal services.
Our work covers a wide variety of buildings and sectors, ranging from domestic properties and housing stock through to commercial premises and large industrial sites.
AC&MS Ltd is UKAS accredited for asbestos surveying, bulk sample identification and asbestos analytical services, including four-stage clearance testing.
The Role
Initially, you will work alongside experienced members of our team, attending a wide variety of properties and sites while gaining the practical knowledge and experience required to progress within the industry.
Your duties will include:
- Assisting qualified asbestos surveyors with Asbestos Management Surveys and Refurbishment & Demolition Surveys.
- Learning how to inspect buildings and identify materials that may contain asbestos.
- Assisting with the sampling of suspected asbestos-containing materials.
- Learning how to accurately record site information, photographs, samples and survey data.
- Assisting with Notifiable Non-Licensed Work (NNLW) involving asbestos-containing materials.
- Assisting with other non-licensed asbestos removal works where required.
- Learning and following asbestos procedures, risk assessments and method statements.
- Correctly using PPE and respiratory protective equipment (RPE).
- Completing relevant site paperwork and documentation.
- Travelling to domestic, commercial and industrial sites as required.
- Undertaking office and administrative duties when required.
- Meeting other members of staff at our office or at designated locations to travel and work together.
- Progressing towards attending sites and carrying out appropriate works independently once suitably trained, qualified, competent and authorised.
Training and Qualifications
Full asbestos-specific training will be provided and funded by AC&MS Ltd.
The successful candidate will receive the necessary in-house and external training required to develop within the role.
Depending on your progression, training may include recognised industry qualifications and training such as:
- BOHS P402 – Surveying and Sampling Strategies for Asbestos in Buildings, or an equivalent recognised asbestos surveying qualification.
- Training for non-licensed and Notifiable Non-Licensed Work (NNLW) involving asbestos.
- Respiratory protective equipment and face-fit training.
- Asbestos medical examinations where required.
- Relevant health and safety training.
- Additional technical and professional training as your career develops.
Our aim is to develop the successful candidate from a trainee into a competent and qualified asbestos professional capable of undertaking asbestos surveying and associated works independently.
The company invests significantly in the training and professional development of its employees. Certain externally funded training, qualifications, medical examinations and associated costs may be subject to a separate training agreement and repayment provisions should an employee leave the company within a specified period following completion of the training. Full details of any applicable arrangements will be provided as part of the employment documentation.
Who We Are Looking For
No previous asbestos experience is required.
We are primarily looking for someone with the right attitude, reliability and willingness to learn and develop a career within the industry.
The successful candidate should:
- Be aged 18 or over due to the nature of the asbestos work undertaken.
- Hold a full UK driving licence and meet the company's vehicle insurance requirements.
- Be reliable, punctual and have a good work ethic.
- Be comfortable with early starts when required.
- Be willing and able to travel to different sites as part of their normal working week.
- Be comfortable with a role combining practical, hands-on work with surveying and administrative duties.
- Be comfortable working in a variety of environments, including domestic, commercial and industrial properties.
- Have good communication skills and a professional manner when dealing with clients.
- Be able to work effectively as part of a team.
- Be capable of working independently once appropriately trained, qualified and authorised.
- Be willing to learn and undertake the necessary training, examinations and competency assessments.
- Have a reasonable level of computer literacy.
- Be prepared to follow strict health and safety procedures associated with working within the asbestos industry.
Previous experience or knowledge of buildings, construction, property maintenance, surveying or a practical trade would be advantageous but is not essential.
Salary and Career Progression
Starting salary: £27,000.00 per year.
The position is subject to a six-month probationary period.
Salary will be reviewed following successful completion of the probationary period and will be reviewed further as you progress through relevant training, qualifications and competency assessments.
This is a genuine trainee position offering the opportunity to develop into a qualified asbestos surveyor while also becoming trained and competent to undertake NNLW asbestos removal works.

Location and Travel
AC&MS Ltd's office and operational base is located in Canvey Island, Essex; however, this is predominantly a site-based role and the majority of your working time will be spent attending client properties and sites.
Our work is primarily located throughout London, Essex and Kent, although AC&MS Ltd undertakes projects throughout the UK and you will therefore be required to travel to other areas when necessary.
Depending on the location and requirements of each project, you may be required to attend our Canvey Island office to collect tools and consumables, equipment or meet another member of the team before travelling to site. On other occasions, you may travel directly to a designated site or meet another member of staff at an agreed location.
Applicants must therefore be able to reliably commute to our Canvey Island office when required and must be comfortable with regular travel as an essential part of the position.
As the role develops and you become appropriately trained, qualified and authorised, you will be expected to attend and carry out works independently using a company van.
Due to the nature and geographical spread of our work, early starts are almost always be required.
Occasional overnight stays may also be necessary for projects further afield, with appropriate accommodation arranged and paid for by the company.
Hours, Travel and Overtime
The contracted working week is 40 hours.
The role involves travelling to sites and applicants must be comfortable with varying travel distances and start times depending on the location and requirements of each project.
Site-based employees are normally paid for a full 8-hour working day on site. Where the allocated site work is completed in less than 8 hours, the normal 8 hours will still be paid.
Travel time to and from site during the normal Monday-to-Friday working week is not normally paid.
Overtime following 8 hours on site Monday to Friday is paid additionally at the normal pro-rata rate and can be claimed in 15-minute increments.
Saturday and Sunday working, when available and agreed, is paid at 1.5 times the normal rate. Travel time is also paid for Saturday and Sunday working.
The position may occasionally involve night work, weekend work or working outside normal hours depending on client and site requirements.
Overtime is paid monthly in arrears.
Company Van
The position comes with a fully equipped company van for work use.
Initially, while undertaking your training, you will regularly work alongside experienced members of our team and may travel together to sites.
As your training and competency progress, you will be provided with a company van to enable you to attend allocated sites and carry out your duties.
The company will provide the specialist equipment, tools, PPE and RPE necessary to undertake your work.
Holiday Entitlement
Holiday entitlement starts at 20 days per year plus the normal 8 bank holidays, subject to pro-rata entitlement depending on your start date.
Our holiday year runs from 1 January to 31 December.
Annual leave entitlement increases by 1 additional day for each completed full year of service, up to a maximum of 25 days annual leave, plus bank holidays.
Employees are required to reserve 3 days of their annual holiday entitlement for the company's Christmas shutdown.
In addition to your normal annual leave entitlement, you will receive an additional paid day's leave for your birthday.

Following successful completion of the six-month probationary period, employees will have the opportunity to opt into the company's private healthcare scheme.

Office Duties
When allocated to work in the office, you may be required to undertake administrative duties and other reasonable tasks associated with the company's operations.
Normal office hours are 9:00am to 5:00pm with a one-hour lunch break.
This is not a home-working position.

Due to the nature of the role, applicants must be prepared to travel regularly and work at different locations.
The role is predominantly site-based and applicants should understand that working within the asbestos industry can involve working in a wide variety of environments and locations, including loft spaces, plant rooms, industrial premises, vacant properties and other areas of buildings and structures as required.
