Hours: 14.5 per week - Thurs 4:45PM-9:15PM - Fri 4:45PM-10:15PM - Sun 2:45PM-7:45PM
Salary: £12.21 per hour
About The Hive
The Hive Youth Zone is a purpose-built facility for young people aged 8–19, and up to 25 for those with additional needs. As part of the OnSide Network, we provide somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to. We offer a wide range of activities and opportunities designed to help young people develop confidence, skills, resilience and aspirations.
Purpose of the Role
The Gym Instructor will support the safe and effective operation of The Hive's gym facilities, delivering engaging fitness sessions and promoting healthy lifestyles to young people. The postholder will create a welcoming, inclusive environment where young people of all abilities feel confident accessing the gym and developing positive attitudes towards physical activity and wellbeing.
The Gym Instructor will act as a positive role model, encouraging participation, building relationships and supporting young people to achieve their individual fitness goals in a safe and supportive setting.
Key ResponsibilitiesGym Delivery & Supervision
- Supervise the gym during allocated sessions, ensuring safe and effective use of equipment.
- Deliver inductions to young people and staff as required.
- Design and deliver age-appropriate gym programmes and fitness sessions.
- Support young people to develop fitness goals and exercise plans.
- Demonstrate correct exercise techniques and provide guidance on safe training practices.
- Monitor gym usage and ensure adherence to gym rules and health and safety procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of inductions, attendance and programme participation.
Youth Work & Engagement
- Build positive, professional relationships with young people.
- Encourage participation from young people who may lack confidence or experience.
- Promote inclusion and ensure all young people feel welcome regardless of ability, background or fitness level.
- Actively engage with young people, offering encouragement, support and motivation.
- Recognise opportunities to support young people's personal and social development through sport and fitness activities.
- Promote positive behaviours and contribute to a safe, respectful environment.
Health & Safety
- Conduct routine equipment checks and report any faults or concerns promptly.
- Ensure gym equipment is used safely and appropriately.
- Follow all safeguarding, health and safety, risk assessment and emergency procedures.
- Administer first aid where trained and appropriate.
- Maintain a clean, safe and organised gym environment.
General Duties
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across The Hive.
- Support sports events, competitions and wider Youth Zone activities when required.
- Attend team meetings, training and supervision sessions.
- Promote The Hive's values and contribute positively to the organisation's culture.
- Undertake any other duties appropriate to the role.
Person SpecificationEssential CriteriaQualifications
- Level 2 Gym Instructor Qualification (or equivalent recognised fitness qualification).
- Current Emergency First Aid at Work qualification (or willingness to obtain).
Knowledge & Experience
- Experience of supervising gym users and delivering fitness programmes.
- Understanding of health and safety requirements within a gym environment.
- Experience of motivating and supporting individuals to achieve fitness goals.
- Knowledge of strength and conditioning principles suitable for young people.
- Understanding of safeguarding principles and working with children and young people.

Desirable Criteria
- Level 3 Personal Trainer qualification.
- Experience working with young people aged 8–19.
- Experience working within a youth work, education, leisure or community setting.
- Experience supporting young people with additional needs or disabilities.
- Knowledge of mental health and wellbeing approaches within physical activity settings.
- Safeguarding training.
