Technical Production Manager
The role…
We are looking for a Technical Production Manager to lead the technical team at The London Palladium.
As an integral part of the venue’s management team, the Technical Production Manager will provide clear and consistent leadership to the technical departments and will ensure excellent working practices are developed to deliver our brand mission; to stage the extraordinary.
Reporting to the General Manager, the Technical Production Manager will be responsible for the practical application of the Company’s Health and Safety policy across both technical theatre operations and building services management while ensuring the financial management of the department. They will deliver the highest standard of customer experience to all productions entering the venue and will oversee a safe and smooth operation in the delivery of venue activities, maintenance of the building, its services and infrastructure.
What you’ll be doing…
The Technical department is split into two distinct areas of responsibility: 1) the resident production and 2) the venue. The Technical Production Manager’s primary focus is the delivery of the Group’s commitments to the incoming productions. In addition, you will manage the Technical & Building Services Manager who manages the technical team, whose primary focus is the delivery of the Group’s commitments to the incoming production, and the venue technicians, whose primary focus is the proactive remedial actions to ensure that the venue remains safe & up to date.
Working closely with the General Manager, Operations Manager and Technical & Building Services Manager you will:
Show/Events

Lead the delivery of the Company’s commitments to the Incoming Productions and all venue stakeholders from a technical perspective, recognizing and balancing their competing needs with those of the theatre.

Arrange and conduct Change of Production Inspections with the relevant local authority for all new shows, ensuring that any recommendations following that inspection are complied with.

Ensure Construction Phase Plans, Risk Assessments, Method Statements & truck plans in place prior to fitting up and getting out of productions.

Attend site and production meetings prior to a production and provide advice on all technical, licensing or Health & Safety issues that may arise. Manage the Technical Standards for Places of Public Entertainment operations, as well as Local Authority Rules of Management and other relevant legislation, regulation, guidance, ACOP etc.

Lead in the advancing of all concerts and events at The London Palladium.

Keep a running cost of any additional items not included in the standard contracts for productions and provide to the General Manager and Operations Manager in advance of any event.

Ensure the CDM (2015) Regulations are being properly implemented in relation to productions and events, both internally and by visiting production companies and event promoters. Will ensure that the Company is fulfilling its obligations as the Principal Contractor, or Principal Designer or Contractor.

Act as the responsible person on site from a Westminster licensing perspective during shows & events, sharing this responsibility with the Technical & Building Services Manager & their Deputies.
Staffing

Foster a positive working environment amongst theatre staff, ensuring that members of staff are kept appraised of both their responsibilities and entitlements.

Proactively arrange technical staff calls to work to meet the operational budgets and cost requirements of events, productions and the Company and notify technical staff of their calls to work in accordance with the provisions of their employment agreement. Make sure that adequate rest periods are being given which comply with the Working Time Directive & local working arrangements.

Oversee the recruitment of all technical staff and ensure that appropriate staffing levels are maintained.

Directly line manage the Technical & Building Services Manager who will in turn manage the Deputy Technical & Building Services Managers, Technicians & Venue Technicians.

Ensure technical staff are trained as per the Groups Training Needs Analysis and ensure that they have or are actively seeking appropriate qualifications to further their careers.
Building Infrastructure

Oversee the Technical & Building Services Manager & Venue Technicians to ensure that:

The maintenance and upkeep of the venue including its facilities, services and fixtures and fittings, always ensuring the highest standard of housekeeping is maintained. This shall include arranging inspections, analysing maintenance and inspection reports and taking appropriate action in each case.

Contribute to the formulation of the rolling refurbishment programme and Repairs and Maintenance budgets, particularly in relation to technical and electrical systems.

Fire safety and suppression equipment in conjunction with the company’s relevant supplier.

Building services and the electrical installation, lighting and emergency lighting.

Technical production equipment including any mechanical installations, stage engineering, lighting and sound equipment, special effects and any other theatrical scenery and properties.

Actively source the best commercial deals for the Company and regularly review the costs and quality of service in relation to all suppliers and service providers.

Ensure essential supplies are ordered for the building, ensuring appropriate stock levels.

Participate in specific project work or working groups as required.
Health and Safety / Compliance

In conjunction with the Technical & Building Services Manager:
-
Be responsible for the practical application of employment law and HR policies and the practical application of the Group’s Health and Safety policy & ensure correct procedures are followed in relation to any accidents and near miss incidents.

Ensure that appropriate risk assessments are in place and regularly updated (in accordance with the Group’s Health and Safety Policy) and ensure any recommendations contained in risk assessments, for the production or building, are implemented.

Arrange and/ or attend Health & Safety and Environmental Health inspections conducted by Camden Council/ Westminster Council / GLA and ensure compliance with their requirements.

Ensure all technical equipment owned or leased by the Company is maintained to the required standards and that appropriate induction, training and risk management arrangements are in place for the use of such equipment.

Contribute to and take a proactive role in the implementation of the theatre’s security arrangements particularly in relation to security technology (CCTV and Door Access etcetera) to ensure the theatre operates in line with the Company’s security strategies, policies and framework.

Attend the annual Loss Control Inspections conducted by the Company’s insurers and ensure compliance with any recommendations made as a result of the inspections.

Keep abreast of current and emerging technical developments and legislation and make any recommendations for improving the technical equipment or standards of the theatre.
What we need…

Experience of overseeing the fitting up and get out of concert, TV or touring productions.

Knowledge of technical theatre systems: Building Management System, Counterweight Flying System, Stage Flooring, Stage Grid System, Rigging Systems, Safety Curtain & Stage Lantern.

Commercial awareness; able to negotiate supplier agreements and manage a budget.

Extensive knowledge of the Health & Safety and Licensing requirements associated with theatrical management.

Working knowledge of Construction and Design Management 2015 and Technical Standards for Places of Entertainment.

Strong verbal communication skills.

Experience of leading, motivating and instructing a technical team.

Can adapt to changing circumstances and overcome challenges.

Can identify training needs and ensure the technical competence of a team.

Experience of successfully delivering projects and working under pressure.

Willingness to challenge existing working methods and to introduce new working practices.

Pragmatic and proactive approach to resource planning.

Electrical experience preferred such as BS7909, C&G 2365, C&G 2391 etc.

Happy to work evenings and weekends on occasion.

Happy to undertake First Aid at Work Training.

Salary & Benefits:
£73,625.63 per annum
Hours of Work: 40 Hours over 5 days (Normally Monday – Friday)
