Full job description

Are you someone who loves cooking proper home-style food and takes pride in making meals people genuinely enjoy?

We are looking for a Cook to join our friendly team at Cedarwood Care Home. The role could suit someone with experience in a professional kitchen, but we would also love to hear from confident home cooks — for example, someone used to cooking fresh meals for a large family, batch cooking, baking, or preparing traditional home-style dishes.

About the Role

We are recruiting for a cook to share a 7-day rota.

The role will be 22.5 hours per week, worked over 3 days, and the other 30 hours per week, worked over 4 days.

The rota will include alternate weekends, and there may be opportunities for additional paid shifts to cover annual leave, sickness, or training.

You’ll help prepare fresh, nutritious meals, snacks, and baked goods for our residents, taking account of individual preferences, appetites, dietary needs, and food safety requirements.

This is a hands-on cooking role in a care home kitchen. You do not need to be a restaurant chef, but you do need to be organised, reliable, calm under pressure, and able to cook tasty, well-presented meals with care.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare and cook fresh meals, snacks, and baked goods to a good standard.

Support seasonal menu planning with the Head Cook, residents, and the wider team.

Cater for special dietary requirements, including softer or modified diets. Training can be provided where needed.

Make sure meals are appetising, well-presented, and served at the correct temperature.

Keep the kitchen clean, safe, and organised in line with food hygiene standards.

Support stock rotation, food storage, ordering, and basic kitchen records.

Engage with residents and staff to gather feedback on meals and the dining experience.

Follow health and safety, food safety, and company policies.

About You

You may have worked as a cook, chef, kitchen assistant, school cook, café cook, or similar — but we are also open to strong home cooks with the right attitude and ability.

You should be someone who:

Enjoys cooking fresh, home-style meals.

Is confident preparing food for a group of people.

Understands the importance of cleanliness, food safety, and organisation.

Can follow menus, recipes, guidance, and dietary instructions.

Is reliable, practical, and able to work independently.

Has a kind, respectful approach to older people.

Takes pride in making food that looks and tastes good.

Is flexible enough to work as part of a shared rota, including alternate weekends.

A Food Hygiene Certificate would be helpful, but training can be provided for the right person.
