Employment details
- Anticipated start date: ASAP
- Starting salary: £20,000 per annum
- Following successful completion of a three-month probationary period, the salary will increase to £21,500 per annum
- Working hours: 37 hours per week
- Monday to Thursday: 7:00am to 3:45pm
- Friday: 7:00am to 11:00am
- Study at Inspiro Learning – will require travelling to Leicester on a Sunday in readiness for Monday start.
The apprenticeship programme
As a Plasser UK Apprentice, you will be enrolled on the NVQ - EAL Level 3 NVQ Railway Engineering Technician programme.
The apprenticeship is expected to last approximately three years. During this time, you will work closely with our experienced Service Engineers, Operations team and Training Department as you progress through the programme.
As part of the apprenticeship, you will also undertake training delivered by Inspiro Learning in Leicester. This will involve diarised periods of 18 weeks within the calendar year training away from home, during which you will be required to stay in Leicester. Accommodation and applicable travel and subsistence expenses will be provided and paid for by Plasser Uk in line with Company policy.
You will learn whilst developing your technical specialism, we will support you, give you every opportunity to continuously learn, develop, progress your skills and knowledge with the goal of achieving Service Engineer status.
It is very important to us that you, think of your apprenticeship as the very start of your professional career with Plasser UK to jump start and provide you with the underpinning technical skills within the engineering team, to enable you to work competently and safely under your own initiative or alongside other competent Service Engineers delivering the highest level of service to our customers.
Person requirements
We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and determined individuals who are able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Applicants should ideally hold a minimum of:
- Grade C or Grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics, or equivalent
- Grade C or Grade 4 in GCSE English, or equivalent
- Accept that 18 weeks of training per year will take place in Leicester to achieve the required qualification,
- On the job learning will take place at PUK West Ealing site.
- Study will take place at Inspiro Learning – Leicester
- The qualification requires a total of 550 guided learning hours split between time at Inspiro Learning & Workplace based tasks
Applicants who have the aptitude and commitment to study towards the required Mathematics and English qualifications during the first year of the apprenticeship may also be considered.
Due to rail industry requirements and safety standards, all apprentices must be at least 18 years old.

Role requirements
The successful applicant will be required to:
- Be medically and physically fit to hold a Network Rail Sentinel qualification
- Hold, or work towards obtaining, a full manual UK driving licence during the apprenticeship
- Be flexible regarding working hours, including weekends, nights and Bank Holidays
- Attend periods of training with Inspiro Learning in Leicester and stay away from home when required
- Work and lodge away from home for extended periods when operationally required
- Maintain a strong focus on customer service
- Understand, follow and work in accordance with established Company procedures
- Work safely at Plasser UK’s West Ealing facility and at customer locations
- Take a logical and structured approach to problem-solving and fault diagnosis
- Be proactive in expanding your knowledge of the technology and systems used on Plasser & Theurer products
Operational working away from home is not expected at the beginning of the apprenticeship but will become a requirement as you progress. Where applicable, accommodation, meals and other authorised expenses will be covered by the Company in line with Company policy.
Recruitment and assessment process
Shortlisted candidates will initially be invited to an interview conducted via Microsoft Teams to discuss the apprenticeship programme and their suitability for the role.
Candidates progressing beyond the initial interview stage will be invited to Plasser UK’s West Ealing facility to complete an application review and a basic aptitude and practical skills assessment. This assessment is intended to help us understand each candidate’s approach to problem-solving, practical tasks and learning.
