Job Title: School Cook / Food Technology Teacher

Location: Poplar House School
Salary: Competitive
Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent
Reports to: Assistant Head Teacher/ Deputy Headteacher

Purpose of the Role

We are seeking a caring, enthusiastic, and adaptable School Cook / Food Technology Tutor to join our small SEND school team. This unique dual-role combines preparing healthy, nutritious meals for pupils and staff with delivering engaging practical food technology lessons to small groups of pupils.

The school has a small number of pupils, allowing for a personalised and supportive approach to learning. The successful candidate will play an important role in promoting healthy eating, developing pupils’ independence and building confidence through practical cooking experiences.

Main Responsibilities

School Cook Duties

Plan, prepare, and cook healthy lunches daily for pupils and staff.
Ensure meals meet nutritional standards and cater for dietary needs and allergies.
Maintain high standards of food hygiene, health, and safety within the kitchen.
Manage food ordering, stock control, and kitchen organisation.
Work within budget guidelines while providing varied and nutritious menus.
Maintain accurate food safety and cleaning records.

Food Technology Tutor Duties

Deliver practical food technology sessions to small groups of pupils (maximum of 6 pupils) with Teaching Assistant support.
Teach pupils practical cooking skills, kitchen safety, food preparation, and nutrition awareness.
Adapt lessons to meet individual learning needs and abilities of SEND pupils.
Support pupils to develop independence, confidence, teamwork, and life skills through cooking activities.
Prepare lesson resources and ingredients for sessions.
Monitor pupil progress and contribute to reports or reviews where required.

Person Specification

Essential

Experience working within a kitchen or catering environment.
Knowledge of healthy eating and nutrition.
Ability to engage positively with children and young people with SEND needs.
Good organisational and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Calm, patient, and flexible approach.

Desirable

Experience teaching or supporting food technology lessons.
Experience working in a school or SEND setting.
Relevant catering or teaching qualification.
Food Hygiene Certificate (Level 2 or above).
Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
