Full job description

We are an established automotive engineering company specialising in engine reconditioning, machining and specialist engine repairs.

We are looking for an experienced Machine Shop & Engine Engineering Manager to take responsibility for the day-to-day running, quality and development of our machine shop.

This is a hands-on senior position. You will be expected to carry out machining work yourself as well as manage the machine shop and develop the way it operates.

The role

You will be responsible for:

Carrying out engine machining, including cylinder boring and honing, crankshaft grinding/regrinding and polishing, cylinder head machining and other specialist engine work.
Managing the day-to-day workload and allocation of work within the machine shop.
Covering machining work during holidays, sickness and busy periods.
Quality checking all machine shop work and ensuring components are machined to the correct specifications and tolerances.
Measuring and recording critical dimensions, clearances, taper, ovality, run-out and other relevant tolerances.
Assessing and developing repair solutions for damaged, unusual or obsolete engine components where replacement parts are unavailable.
Designing and making specialist tooling, jigs and fixtures where required.
Maintaining and monitoring the condition of all machine shop equipment and arranging servicing and repairs when required.
Training and developing existing machine shop staff.
Introducing improved working methods to increase efficiency, consistency and quality.
Recording job times and using computerised systems to monitor work and improve job costing.
Working closely with our engine-building and vehicle repair teams to resolve technical and machining problems.

What we are looking for

You must have substantial hands-on experience in engine machining and reconditioning and have a strong understanding of how engines work.

You must be confident with:

Manual/traditional engine machining equipment
Cylinder boring and honing
Crankshaft grinding/regrinding and polishing
Cylinder head machining and repair
Precision measurement and metrology
Working accurately to engine manufacturer’s specifications and tolerances
Diagnosing machining and component problems
Specialist and one-off engine repairs
Making or adapting tooling for machining and engine-building applications

Experience with Prince crankshaft grinding machinery or similar equipment would be an advantage.

We are particularly interested in someone who can look at a damaged or unusual engine component and work out how it can be repaired, rather than simply carrying out standard machining operations.

Management and technical responsibility

This role is not simply about operating machines.

You will be expected to take technical responsibility for the machine shop, improve working practices, maintain quality standards, train staff and help develop the department.

You will also need good computer skills for job recording, time tracking, quality control and machine maintenance records.

Qualifications

A relevant qualification such as IMI, Level 3 Automotive Engineering, Engineering or Mechanical Engineering is desirable.

However, extensive practical experience will be considered in place of formal qualifications.

Important

This is a senior specialist position. General vehicle repair, basic machining or CNC-only experience will not be sufficient.

We are looking for someone with genuine, substantial experience in engine machining and reconditioning who can work independently, solve technical problems and take responsibility for the machine shop.
