Full job description

Job Summary

As Senior Sous Chef, you will support the Head Chef in producing first‑class, nutritious food for pupils, staff, parents and visitors. You’ll help lead a busy kitchen, contribute to menu development, uphold the highest food safety standards, and ensure smooth day‑to‑day operations, including hospitality, events and special functions.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast‑paced environment, enjoys mentoring others, and brings fresh ideas to modern school catering.

Duties

Food Production - Deliver high‑quality, fresh, nutritious dishes daily and for hospitality events.
Menu Development - Work alongside the Head Chef to create innovative, balanced menus that reflect dietary needs and emerging trends.
Service Leadership - Run the pass during service, ensuring timely, consistent presentation and quality.
Food Safety & Compliance - Maintain HACCP standards, allergen controls, accurate labelling, temperature records and hygiene procedures.
Team Support - Lead by example, support colleagues, guide new staff and handle minor issues in the absence of management.
Stock & Budget Control - Assist with ordering, stock rotation, waste reduction and monitoring stock levels.
Events & Hospitality - Help plan and deliver special events, showcasing the department’s specialist skills.

About You

You will bring professionalism, creativity and a passion for exceptional food. We’re looking for someone who can inspire confidence, maintain high standards and contribute positively to the culture of the catering team.

Essential skills and experience include:

NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Professional Cookery (or equivalent).
Level 3 Award in Supervising Food Safety in Catering.
Strong background in large‑scale catering and hospitality.
Proven ability to lead, motivate and support a team.
Experience producing menus for varied nationalities and dietary needs.
Ability to work under pressure while maintaining high standards.
Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
Creative thinking, initiative and a positive, reliable attitude.

Desirable:

Experience in an educational or community setting.
First Aid training.

Working Pattern

This is a full time, full year position, working 39 hours per week. This role involves working 5 days over 7, including weekends. Hours may vary, particularly outside of term time. Annual leave is generally taken during school holidays.
